The opening event of the Dartmouth Mayflower 400 week, on Sunday 30th August 2020, will be a Grand Dart River Pageant in the Harbour. The aim of this event is to bring together as many boats as practicable to form a vast armada and create a magnificent spectacle commemorating this historic anniversary. We hope the Pageant will attract significant community interest up and down the river, and include some of the beautiful yachts who have previously enjoyed their visits to the river for Classic Regattas or have paraded during the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta.
There will be a procession from Noss on Dart Marina, starting at 1430, led by the Matthew of Bristol, playing the part of the Mayflower. The Brixham Trawler Pilgrim will accompany the Matthew playing the part of the Speedwell. Following vessels will be formed into “squadrons” or groups of similar size or from the same sailing club from the River Dart community, with a massed squadron of gigs bringing up the rear. They will proceed down-river towards the Castles, passing a saluting base and VIP en route. Vessels are encouraged to “dress overall”, and skippers and crews to wear “Pilgrim” costumes.
Details are still being finalised, so this is for guidance only.
The minimum requirements for entry are as follows:
- Boats of any description that on the day must be propelled by either a motor or manpower with oars; sails will not be hoisted.
- Each boat must be able to maintain a controlled passage speed of 3 knots.
- Each boat and skipper must be suitably insured.
A small entry fee will be levied to cover, for the skipper:
Dartmouth Mayflower 400 ‘Battle Flag’;
Certificate of Participation;
One ticket to an informal evening event
Additional brochures, mugs and tickets for the evening event will be available for purchase to enable your crew to join in the fun. In addition there will of course be the necessary Sailing Instructions and careful briefing sessions in advance of the event.
If you are interested in taking part with your boat, please complete our Expressions of Interest form below. This doesn’t commit you to anything, but will enable us to gauge the potential number of vessels involved. More details and a formal Application Form will be made available in the New Year.
This will be a unique event in the River Dart and there will not be its like again for many a year. Please don’t miss the opportunity to be involved.
