A 10 foot replica scale model of the Mayflower is being built by local shipwrights with students from the South Devon Marine Academy. The project is being managed by Capt.Ian Kirkwood, for the Dartmouth Mayflower 400 team.
The interior of the model will be exposed from stem to stern on one side to display the construction and layout, including pilgrim and crew accommodation and other contents, such as model pilgrim figures, hammocks, storage, cooking facilities, livestock, etc. The model will be exhibited in the town with display boards and descriptive interactive screens, providing an exciting and permanent educational addition to the Mayflower 400 legacy. It will be a year round visitor attraction.
Thanks to support from Britannia Royal Naval College, construction will be at Sandquay, and all materials and equipment are expected to be on site, for work to commence, by the end of March. The budget for this project is around £27,000, with £10,000 raised or pledged so far. Sponsorship in the form of materials and equipment has already been generously offered by RGC Building Supplies, Axminster Machinery and Carpenter Oak.
As the build continues there will be opportunities to visit the workshop and follow the progress. If you are interested in supporting this exciting project please contact us through the website or email
